GLOSSARY OF
RADIOLOGICAL TERMINOLOGY
T
| TERRESTRIAL RADIATION | The portion of the natural radiation (background radiation) that is emitted by naturally occurring radioactive materials in the earth. |
| THERMOLUMINESCENT DOSIMETER (TLD) | Crystalline materials that emit light if they are heated after they have been exposed to radiation. |
| TOTAL EFFECTIVE DOSE EQUIVALENT (TEDE) | The sum of the deep dose equivalent (for external exposures) and the committed effective dose equivalent (for internal exposures). |
| TRITIUM (H-3) | A radioactive isotope of hydrogen. Because it is chemically identical to natural hydrogen, tritium can easily be taken into the body by ingestion or inhalation pathways. Tritium is a 100% pure beta emitter with a radioactive half-life of 12.5 years. |
